Rustic Camping at Waterloo

It's been a long time since we've been on a family vacation.  A long long time.  So, I decided it would be fun (during a spell of 70-80 degree weather) to go camping, rustic camping, without electricity or running water.

I copied the directions incorrectly from my email, so we drove past our exit and ended up back tracking.  It worked out in our favor though, because we found a roadside firewood stand as we were winding back through the woods.

When we arrived, everyone unloaded and we used disinfecting wipes on every surface!  While there was no electricity, they did have solar powered lights, which was a pleasant surprise.

Once everyone was settled in, we started reading Little House in the Big Woods the first book in the Little House on the Prairie series.  We read about half the book during our stay!  We were all huddled around the propane stove, because it was cold!

We had all eaten a dinner of sandwiches during the one hour drive, so none of us were particularly hungry upon arrival.

Outside, Billy set up a nice fire in the firepit and got a table covered in anticipation of rain on Saturday.

The marshmallows were quickly pulled out for roasting.

The big girls are learning about the sun, moon, and stars, and Emily was excited to spy the waxing moon.

Snuggled up by the fire.

The cabin had warmed up surprisingly well while we were outside.  The night was tough for the adults.  I instructed everyone to bring extra blankets (picturing a cold night) but we were actually too warm.  The beds were so hard, the old wooden floor might have had more give.  And poor Billy, without his cpap, was very noisily snoring every time he managed to succumb to sleep. We cracked the windows near our beds, and moved on top of the extra blankets, but whenever Billy managed sleep, I woke up to the noise.

My children did not seem to be bothered by any of those things, and were up early the next morning.  With the looming rain, I trudged out of bed, so that we could hike the nearby trail.

Billy was so poorly rested, he opted to stay a the cabin and nap.  When Alice was given the opportunity to not hike, she also stayed behind.

Before searching out the trail, we explored the area in between our cabin and the water pump/picnic/sign in area.

Since this massive park is full of horse trails, there were many built in horse mounting areas and poles to tie them.

Grace found a heart shaped rock for her collection before we even got to the trail.

The trail we took is an equine/hiking trail.  The sign said that it was about 2 miles, but there were no markers along the way, and the map was very unhelpful.  At the bottom it displayed the "you are here" marker, which was nowhere to be found on the map?!

We stopped and took pictures and looked at everything.

Horse prints!

The forest was definitely in transition mode.  With all leaves everywhere, this could just as easily be fall as spring.

Nifty umbrella trees.  These were all along our path!

Earthworm.

Grace with her heart rock collection.

William found a stone shaped like a car.

Getting a closer look.

About half way through, everyone was tired.  Emily changed the purpose of her hat to be a bag for her rainbow rock collection.

We saw a very cool hallow tree with a built in door, skylight and window!

All four took turns checking it out.

From this point on, it was a very long walk.  They were tired, I ended up carrying all the rock collections, and the rain caught up with us.

It was not a heavy rain, but the kids kept asking if we were lost.  Since there were only 2 options that we encountered (that both lead to a paved road) I knew that we were still on the right path, but could not give them a time estimate.  As we rounded a corner (only about 20 minutes before I told them we would turn around and go back) we saw the back end of our car! We had made it!

Emily and Grace were both anxious to wash their rock collections, but they had to pump their own water.

Billy was awake when we returned, and apparently Alice missed us.  Billy got the grill going, to cook up all of our food, just in case the rain came too strong to cook later in the day. The kids cleaned up their bunks and snacked while we waited for grilled food.

Emily's rainbow rock collection.  We spent a long time trying to unearth the large one in the center.  It was much bigger than we could tell from the surface.  And sadly, it turned out not even to be the most vibrant green in her collection.

It lightly rained for the remainder of the afternoon, but never a downpour, so Billy was still able to cook out.

The restroom facilities. It wasn't the worst outhouse I've used.  It was spacious and maintenance did a better job than most of clearing out cobwebs.  There were skylights in the day, but you had to bring your own illumination at night.  Since the weather was still on the cool side, the smell was kept at bay.  I don't think I'd want to use it in the middle of summer though.

Cooking up the last of the marshmallows.

Log tea party. = )

They will not be sharing a chair much longer!

Not long after this, the rain subsided, and facing another night on the indescribably hard bed, we took a vote.  Who wanted to stay and who wanted to go home early.

So, at 730 on Saturday, we packed up camp and returned home.  Grace was the only one who voted to stay, so she was excused from general packing, and only responsible for her own personal belongings.  Alice was ridiculously helpful and we were packed up within an hour.

At home this is the reality of 7 people on a single night campout:

If we return, which it was not so awful that we couldn't, we would have to bring extra padding for our beds and find a way to power Billy's cpap.  In fact, I do hope we return, because we would have a much better idea of what to bring and what to expect!

Dragon, Knight and Lady Stories

In language arts this week the little ones are writing a story that incorporates a dragon a knight and a lady. These are their tales.

Grace

Once upon a time, the dragon saw a princess at her castle and he was curious, and saw that her dress was pretty and pink and shiny. He took the princess to his cave and put her in his gem pile.

The knight sees the princess fly away. So, the knight chased after the princess. He finally got to the cave and he saw the dragon. And the princess was awakening. So, the knight sneaked in, but the dragon saw him because his armor was shiny. He was curious again, and took him to his gem pile. And they both awakened. So, they saw each other and quietly, and the dragon heard him. The dragon looked and saw that they were escaping, so the dragon breathed fire and they looked at the dragon to see that the dragon was angry and mad.

They had to escape, but the dragon had a secret entrance that the dragon accidentally pushed the button, but they ran and got out. The princess ran back to the castle, but the knight stayed to fight at the cave.

So, the knight had a sword and the horse was still at the bottom, and so the princess actually only got down because she wanted to get on the horse, but she didn’t know if she could, because the knight didn’t say so. The big sword cut open the wing so the dragon couldn’t fly. The dragon breathed fire and was dying. The dragon breathed it on the wall and it came back and burned it’s hurt wing that was bleeding. So, it died.

And then they safely got back to the castle, and the villagers were like “hooray, hooray!” The knight came into the castle as the new bravest knight.

The End.

Juliet

Once upon a time, there was a princess and a dragon and a knight.

The dragon took the princess, when the knight and the princess were having dinner at the castle. And the dragon took the princess and the knight grabbed on his tail because he wanted to follow the princess to where she was going. And the dragon felt something on its tail so he swung it off the cliff.

The knight landed safely in some water. And it was deep deep water, it was actually the ocean. And so, a mermaid found him. And so, it took him up to the sand on the beach. The knight woke up and found a giant bird. And so, it tamed it and asked it to go to the giant castle up in the clouds.

The knight fought the dragon and so the princess liked the shiny gems that the dragon put her in. and so she saw the knight fighting and said “why are you guys fighting?” And then the knight said, I came up to save you.

The princess was like “oh, okay, well I want to stay up here, because I like the gems.” And the dragon was hopping and it shook the whole castle. And then the princess decided that she didn’t want to stay anyway.

So, the princess went with the knight and they had a nice dinner again. And the princess took two of the gems that the dragon gave her.

The End.

William

Once upon a time, there was a knight and he was just walking along with the princess. And, they kept on walking until they saw this little shed, and then they went in for food. And so, then what happened next was that they saw this broken dragon robot. They didn’t mind until a pancake flew into the air hit the ceiling and broke the ceiling into pieces. Then, ceiling fell onto the robot, connecting him together, and nails fell into place on the robot and then a drill fell which was stuck with pancake syrup and then the drills connected the robot and then a waffle hit the turn on button and the knight and the lady had to stop eating and ran out. The robot shot 15 missiles at them blowing up the entire shed.

The robot was chasing after them, and he shot a grenade out with his wings. Then it exploded, tripping the knight, and then the dragon breathed fire, but it hit the knight’s shield and protected him. And then he went to a farm with a lady, and the dragon shot 25 missiles at the knight. So, the knight used all the food around him to make a wall. But since they were heat seeking missiles, two of them flew back and hit the dragon.

The lady played country music and so the dragon hated country music, because he liked more intense music, and he flew away. But luckily the dragon dropped a heat seeking missile, which the knight found and lighted it, and used it to blow up the dragon. The knight and the lady went out to a spot where there wasn’t a robot and ate.

The End.

Next week, they will make them into an illustrated "book!"

Spring Is In The Air

The days had been trending warmer (we even hit 80 one day!) but now we have sunk back down, hopefully very temporarily.

School is flying by, we only have 5 weeks left until our summer break!

Once the temperature warmed up a bit, we were able to find an earthworm to observe!

Grace loved wearing her gift from Zoey to school last week.

We are going camping later this year, and since we will be staying in a rustic (no electricity) cabin, I thought that everyone should have their own light source.  William is getting a pocket knife (maybe) but his didn't ship with the other items.  I personalized them, mostly to cut down on fights, but I also just really love putting vinyl on everything.

For our nature study, it wanted us to go out for a picnic.  The week we went was much too cold, so we did the "extension" activities instead.  The next week was almost 40 degrees warmer (and in the high 70s) so it was a very pleasant trip!  Alice is not a fan of our nature study trips and only came out of the car long enough to complete the assignment, and grab something to eat.

Here's hoping for some warmer weather soon!

Grace and Juliet's 7th Birthday!

One final picture as 6 year olds!

This year, their big day fell on a Friday.  Avia came over early for cake, and they opened all their presents first thing!

One of their classmates (Grace's bff Zoey) sent them the sweetest gift a few days later: coordinating explorer kits!!

They collectively decided that they were not going to use their gear outside until we go camping later this year. = )

And a couple of quick recent stories.

Grace wanted me to download Disney plus for her tablet. Since it is a birthday gift from Sarah, the login and password are stored separately from all my other passwords. I got her all set up, but the next day it was asking to log in again. I was fussing at the tablet that I had told it to save the info*, and Grace pipes up "maybe it didn't hear you?"

We have a countdown chain for our camping trip. My policy is that the first person to put their toothbrush in their mouth in the morning gets to cut off the paper. Yesterday, Juliet popped out of bed and made a beeline for the door. Grace, sensing her excitement, was quick to follow. It was a race to the bathroom, that I assume Grace won. An argument ensued. Apparently, while Grace was putting her toothpaste on, Juliet simply stuck her toothbrush in her mouth, thus winning the right to cut the day's loop.**

I think they had a fun day couple of days, and love being 7 year olds!

*I clicked the box that said "remember me"

**Had I not witnessed Juliet being the first to remember, I might have judged it differently. But, I have no toothpaste qualification on the policy. And I'm kind of impressed that she found a loophole. She did go back in and brush her teeth with toothpaste afterwards.
